Case Studies: Real Situations, Compassionate Solutions
At Emdecon, we are called upon to assist in some of the most challenging moments in people’s lives. Every situation is different, and every client deserves discretion, dignity, and care.
The following case studies share real-world scenarios we’ve helped with. All identifying details have been removed or changed to protect privacy, and any written messages are shared with names and personal information fully redacted.
These stories are shared not to shock, but to demonstrate how professional and compassionate cleanup can help people move forward.
Case Study #1: Unattended Death Cleanup in a Private Residence
Situation
We were contacted after a loved one passed away alone in their home and was not discovered for some time. The home was impacted by hoarding disorder, and the circumstances were both complex and emotionally heavy.
The deceased’s daughters all lived out of province, with one living in another country. They were suddenly faced with coordinating an overwhelming and deeply personal cleanup from hundreds — and in one case, thousands — of kilometres away. They were grieving, trying to process the loss, and unsure how to move forward when they couldn’t physically be there.
Challenges
-
Biohazard contamination requiring immediate professional attention
-
Strong odours and unsafe conditions within the home
-
Hoarding-related hazards that made the space difficult to navigate
-
Family members unable to attend the property in person
-
A narrow window to act following body removal
-
The emotional weight of asking strangers to step into such a personal space
Our Approach
We arrived quickly and were on site ahead of body removal to ensure nothing was delayed and the family did not have to worry about next steps.
From the beginning, our focus was not only on the technical cleanup, but on supporting the family through a process they never expected to face. We took time to explain each step, offered reassurance, and maintained steady, compassionate communication so the daughters could feel informed and supported — even from afar.
We carefully secured the affected areas, established proper containment, removed contaminated and unsalvageable materials, and completed detailed cleaning, sanitization, and deodorization. Every decision was made with respect for both the home and the person who had lived there.
Outcome
The home was safely restored to a clean, habitable condition, allowing the family to take the next steps without having to confront the physical aftermath of their loss.
Most importantly, the daughters were able to grieve without carrying the burden of coordinating an emergency cleanup on their own. Our goal was to give them one less thing to worry about during one of the hardest moments of their lives.
Words from the Famiy
We couldn’t recommend Emdecon Inc more if we tried. Not only did they professionally and quickly deal with the initial cleanup task that we hired them for, in incredibly difficult and tricky circumstances for us (initially we had to deal with everything over the phone as we all lived a great distance away) but we ended up keeping them on for further jobs because of the depth of their helpfulness and kindness. Emma and her team got so much done for us, going above and beyond to help us with the monumental task we had to deal with. Not only that, but they did so in such a supportive way and with such empathy that it made all the difference for us. Im sure a lot of companies could have “got the job or jobs done”. But our situation was a tragic and emotionally distressing one for my family, and having people around who genuinely made our navigating the circumstances easier on a human level is something we will be forever grateful for.

Case Study #2: Helping a Senior Take the First Step Toward Change
Situation
We were contacted by a senior who had been living alone and quietly struggling with hoarding for many years. Over time, the home became increasingly difficult to manage, and everyday tasks began to feel overwhelming.
After a lot of reflection, they reached a point where they knew something needed to change — but didn’t know how to begin or who to trust with such a deeply personal situation.
Challenges
-
- Long-standing hoarding disorder with emotional attachment to belongings
-
Limited physical stamina and mobility concerns
-
Fear of judgment or loss of control
-
A home environment that no longer felt safe or functional
-
The emotional weight of asking for help for the first time
Our Approach
From the very beginning, we moved at the client’s pace. Our role was not to rush decisions or take over, but to provide support, reassurance, and practical help in a way that respected their autonomy.
We worked side-by-side with the client to sort through belongings, allowing them to make informed choices about what to keep, donate, or discard. Breaks were encouraged, emotions were respected, and every step was guided by empathy rather than pressure.
We focused on restoring safe pathways, improving functionality within the home, and creating a space that felt manageable and dignified — not perfect.
Outcome
By the end of the process, the home was safer, more accessible, and significantly less overwhelming. More importantly, the client expressed a sense of relief and pride in taking the first step toward change.
What began as a cleanup became something much more meaningful: a turning point that allowed the client to remain safely in their home and move forward with renewed confidence.
